As economists predict slow growth for the U.S. economy over the next few years, companies are turning to emerging markets such as Africa, Brazil, China, India and Russia to grow their business.

As economists predict slow growth for the U.S. economy over the next few years, companies are turning to emerging markets such as Africa, Brazil, China, India and Russia to grow their business.

This week, Coca-Cola announced that it will be making a $4 billion investment in China over the next three years. Coca-Cola’s sales in China grew 24% in the most recent quarter; in addition, China is Coke’s third largest market. Coke CEO Muhtar Kent stated, “We don’t see China only as a great growth market. We see China as a future market for further innovation that will benefit our business globally.”

Proctor & Gamble is also looking to emerging markets including Africa, Brazil and India to grow its business. This year, Proctor & Gamble plans to enter Brazil with products like Oral B toothpaste and Olay skin cream. According to the Wall Street Journal, “In Brazil, P&G employees pore over maps that document demographic trends and pinpoint stores that don’t yet sell the company’s products.”

Pepsi has taken the strategy of growing its business internationally through acquisitions. In April 2011, Pepsi announced it was purchasing dairy products and fruit-juice maker OAO Wimm-Bill-Dann for $5.4 billion. The acquisition makes Russia the largest market for Pepsi outside of the United States.

Even ad agencies are capitalizing on emerging markets. Ogilvy & Mather launched a division in its New York City office to help Chinese companies with marketing and public relations in the United States. Ogilvy has plans over the next few years to expand this service to Africa, Brazil and India.

If it is right for their business model, U.S. companies should strongly consider growing their business internationally as a way to balance the slow growth predicted for the domestic economy.

The jQuery Mobile Framework allows developers to build mobile websites in the same way that they would build websites for desktop browsers. jQuery Mobile is a touch-optimized web framework for smartphones and tablets. It acts as a unified user interface system across all popular mobile device platforms, built on the rock-solid jQuery and jQuery UI foundation. Its lightweight code is built with progressive enhancement and has a flexible, easily themeable design. To ensure cross-browser/-device compatibility, jQuery Mobile is built on clean, semantic HTML.

This blog post just touches the tip of the iceberg by listing some key features, supported platforms and the basic mobile page structure and by sharing some useful links. The use and role of the jQuery Mobile framework in developing mobile websites is huge. Read further to learn more about this awesome framework.

Key features:

Built on jQuery core for familiar and consistent jQuery syntax and a minimal learning curve

Compatible with all major mobile & desktop platforms – iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Palm WebOS, Windows 7 Mobile, Nokia/Symbian, Opera Mobile/Mini, Firefox Mobile and all modern desktop browsers

Lightweight size – Small file sizes (about 20kb compressed for all mobile functionality) and minimal image dependencies for faster load times

HTML5 Markup – for fast development and minimal required scripting

Progressive enhancement approach brings core content and functionality to all mobile, tablet and desktop platforms. For newer mobile platforms, it leads to a rich installed application-like experience.

Automatic initialization – All jQuery Mobile widgets found on a page are automatically initialized by using HTML5 data-role attributes in the HTML markup to act as the trigger

Accessibility features – such as WAI-ARIA ensure that the pages work for screen readers (e.g., VoiceOver in iOS) and other assistive technologies

Touch and mouse event support – New events streamline the process of supporting touch, mouse and cursor focus-based user input methods with a simple API

New plugins – UI widgets enhance native controls with touch-optimized, themable controls

Powerful theming framework – Makes it easy to build highly branded experiences

Supported Platforms

At this stage (Beta 2 release), jQuery Mobile works on the vast majority of all modern desktop, smartphone, tablet and e-reader platforms. In addition, older browsers and feature phones are also supported because of its progressive enhancement approach. Supported platforms include iOS, Android 21.- 2.3, Android Honeycomb, Windows Phone 7, BlackBerry 6.0, Nokia Series 60, Plam WebOS, Firebox Mobile, Opera Mobile and Kindle 3 among smartphones and tablets; and Chrome, Firefox, IE and Opera Desktop among computer browsers.

Mobile page structure

The standard structure of a web page using jQuery Mobile is written in the following lines. Each page is just a div with the attribute data-role set as “page.” Any valid HTML markup can be used within a page, but divs with data-roles of “header,” “content” and “footer” are used most often. An HTML file can also contain multiple pages that are loaded together by stacking multiple divs with data-role=”page.”

<div data-role=”page”>
<div data-role=”header”>…</div>
<div data-role=”content”>…</div>
<div data-role=”footer”>…</div>
</div>

There are many cool features about jQuery Mobile framework, such as Auto Initialization, Page Linking, Theming, Form Elements, etc. Apart from a minimal learning curve (if you are familiar with jQuery), jQuery Mobile takes on so much of the functionality for which we’ve been creating custom code. With conventional jQuery, developing a mobile website often means handwriting code to load pages using Ajax, creating animations to style elements and make the site feel more like a native app and using a lot of images to achieve the desired look and feel – not to mention making sure that it works consistently across all major mobile devices. jQuery makes a developer’s life so much easier: especially with the recent awareness and popularity for “Going Mobile” with your business, this framework is worth taking a deeper look at because it can save a lot of time, code and overhead.

You can read more about jQuery Mobile framework and how to use it for the best in the following links:

It’s well known that the best and most reliable form of effective marketing is “Word of Mouth.” A person is more inclined to buy/use a certain product that has been referred by somebody they know. It’s also known that marketers have zero control over word of mouth marketing, but thanks to the advent of social media, this is not true anymore. Brands can have an online presence on various social platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc. where real people can Like, Follow or Subscribe to their brands and show their friends, followers and connections what they use and prefer, giving an indirect word of mouth.

This is just one of the benefits of having your brand present on social networking sites. Another big advantage of being in the social realm is the interaction with your clients. We’re getting lazier (or smarter!), and we would prefer to have things in the fastest, most convenient way possible. With the advances in technologies and everyone having BlackBerries, Androids, Windows and iPhones, people are getting used to doing everything with the touch of a finger using the same tool. The point is that you and I would rather have everything in one place than having it at a hundred different places. For the same reason, it’s easier for a customer to give feedback to a company using a tool that he uses (already) to connect with his family and friends, rather than filling out a feedback form on the company’s website. It’s also a great way to inform people about the latest news and reviews about the brand’s products, share offers and deals, or engage in a general conversation about the brand or the industry.

A lot of companies are embracing social media consistently. And if you’re reading this but you continue to shy away from the social web, there couldn’t have been a better time for you to get started. NOW is the time. It’s quite possible that your clients are already on the social web and are using the F-FACTOR to their advantage. The F-factor, as coined by trendwatching.com, refers to Friends, Fans & Followers and how they can greatly influence consumers’ purchasing decisions in ever-more sophisticated ways. If you’re still not convinced, here are a few stats that would, or rather should, surprise you:

There are over 500 million active users spending over 700 billion minutes a month on Facebook. (Source: Facebook, April 2011)

Every month, more than 250 million people engage with Facebook across more than 2.5 million external websites, demonstrating that the impact is beyond Facebook – and can be a good source of increased traffic on your website. (Source: Facebook, April 2011)

The average user clicks the ‘Like’ button 9 times each month. (Facebook, 2010)

Three quarters of Facebook users have ‘Liked’ a brand. (Source: AdAge/ Ipsos, February 2011)

Juicy Couture found that their product purchase conversion rate increased by 160% after installing social sharing features (Source: CreateTheGroup, February 2011)

Incipio Technologies, a gadget accessory retailer, found that referrals from Facebook had a conversion rate that doubled their previous average (Source: Business Insider, March 2011)

Hopefully, you’re now convinced that having a social presence for your brand is nothing less than mandatory, but you should keep in mind that it’s also important to make that presence effective. There are a few bottlenecks that you may come across when you’re first introduced to the social web, or may be currently facing, or even struggling with, if you already have a presence on the social realm. We, at Domus Inc. have helped our various clients through consultation and implementation of several strategies and ideas to achieve a breakthrough in their social media campaigns. Here are a few things that you may need help with:

Getting Friends, Followers & Fans

Remember the F-FACTOR that I just mentioned. Well, in order to get the full benefits of the F-Factor, you have to get a good amount of the ‘F’, i.e. Friends, Followers and Fans. Once you have created a final draft of your brand page on a social networking site, it would be a good idea to send out an email to your company’s current distribution lists highlighting a few benefits (announcing exclusive offers would be even better) that you may be offering on the social platforms. Including the social media icons on your website’s home page is a no brainer – if you’re on the sites, tell people about that! Some other strategies such as sweepstakes, giveaways, and special deals can lure more fans, while things like Facebook ads, Google ads, etc. directing viewers to your social pages can garner a decent number of fans and followers. Domus Inc., has helped one of its clients in the luxury kitchen appliances industry to increase its fans nearly tenfold through specially designed social media campaigns.

Interacting with your followers, and getting them to interact with you

Getting fans and followers is one thing, and getting them to interact and give feedback is another. A social networking page that has interesting, relevant and engaging content is more successful than the one that is just there for the brand to have a presence on the site. Ideally, the social page should be one of your company’s primary sources to inform followers/fans about new developments such as product launches, events, special deals etc. It’s also a good idea to engage in dialogue with fans and followers on events/occasions close to them such as the holiday season, the super bowl etc. This creates a fun experience and more personal experience for the users. It’s also a good idea to respond to user feedback and questions from time to time so that they have a feeling that their social interaction is not going unheard. Domus Inc. maintains social content for some of its clients and has had excellent results in terms of user interaction and responding to feedback.

Getting the fans to get you more fans

Now that you have a good enough active fan base, it is time to spread the word of mouth. Usually interesting and interactive content is a good source to get new fans from existing fans since most social networking sites are designed to publish all the interaction of a user on to their profiles, which, in turn, their connections see, and (ideally) notice your brand’s presence. Running occasional competitions and referral awards to your current fan base can prove to be a good resource for adding to your own social media “popularity.”

Keeping an eye on the competition

You should not be surprised to find your brand’s competitors on the same social networking site as you are on. Chances are that they are already there and engaging with potential customers while you read this blog post. Social networking sites are a good tool to monitor the latest and greatest activities of your competitors while giving you an opportunity to deliver something better. Engaging in dialogue on a common platform is also suggestion. For example, a company making mp3 players should interact with users on a page related to music, where other mp3 companies may also share their posts. This will mark your presence on the platform and will put your brand in a potential customer’s line of vision.

So, are you ready to embrace Social Media and use its pace to get ahead in the marketing race?

Getting on the social web is a necessity and soon enough, every person who is on a social networking site should expect to see their favorite brand on their favorite site. And, as any marketer knows, it’s not a good practice to disappoint a customer or a potential customer, and not give him what he would expect.

I think it’s a good idea to have some expert consultation and advice if you are new to social networking sites or are struggling to achieve desired results. We, at Domus Inc. are Social Media experts, and our various clients are benefiting from our experience and expertise. If you would like Domus to help you in building your business on the Social Realm, please feel free to contact our CEO directly at betty.tuppeny@domusinc.com or by calling 215-772-2805.

Web 3D is a technology that enables 3D graphics to be displayed on a website. This technology is becoming more popular and is rapidly developing. This article will explain the recent technology trend of Web 3D and how to prepare for a 3D advertising future.

History of 3D advertising

Table 1.Chronicles of Web 3D

3D advertising was born during the 2nd generation of Web 3D. Wildtangent and Viewpoint created several experimental advertisements for Nike, Coke, Ford, and Toyota[4]. However, there was no standard for 3D graphics, so companies created their own format using ActiveX control. ActiveX control often irritated users due to features such as installing additional toolbars in a users’ browser or monitoring users’ information without their knowledge[5]. It was unfortunate that the success of these early 3D advertisements was limited due to being built black hat and without a standard. Also, at the time, another factor limiting the success of 3D advertising was that most computers didn’t have enough computing power to run 3D graphics in a browser.

Recent Trends

Microsoft announced their new web browser IE9 on March 14, 2011. This is Microsoft’s first browser partially supporting the HTML5 standard. Recently, Microsoft has also announced their new IE10 preview 1 at a MIX 2011 event just a month after launching IE9.[6] One of the major updates for IE10 is faster GPU acceleration. GPU acceleration handles most graphic effects including 3D rendering (but, Microsoft doesn’t include the WebGL context, yet.) Microsoft also announced Silverlight 5, a rich media platform (even richer than HTML5[7]), which now has a 3D API derived from XNA, Microsoft’s game framework.[8] It is clear Microsoft is joining the Web 3D race.

Adobe has announced “Molehill” which is code name for a new 3D API that will be a subset of the Adobe Flash platform. This API allows rendering of 3D graphics and shaders using GPU. Molehill will be published to a new version of Flash player. Since 99% of internet-enabled desktop users have flash player, you can expect almost all desktop users will have Molehill.[9] HTML5 is changing the rules of the entire web world, but did you know that Web 3D is one of the major changes in HTML5? On March 3, 2011, Khronos group, an open standards consortium, released a final WebGL 1.0 Specification.[10] WebGL is a web standard for a low-level 3D graphics API based on OpenGL ES 2.0, exposed through the HTML5 Canvas element as Document Object Model interfaces.[11] Currently, recent versions of Firefox, Chrome, and Safari support WebGL, and eventually Internet Explorer will support it. The iPhone and iPad, don’t support WebGL for now, but the devices will in the future due to Apple’s strategy of supporting HTML5.[12]

Comparing Web 3D technologies

Comparing Web 3D technologies could be confusing for advertising agencies since the offerings have different specs and support from various web browsers across different platforms. Right now, it is hard to predict who will become the leader in 3D advertising.

Table 2. Comparison of Web 3D technologies

WebGL

WebGL is now a web standard and will dominate the 3D advertising world, but not in the near future. If you think about HTML5 as an advertising platform, you might consider including WebGL in your long term plan. Microsoft has not announced their support of WebGL officially yet, so Microsoft’s plans could be a decision point for you.

In mobile, few devices such as Nokia N900[17] support WebGL, but HTML5 is becoming a major platform for mobile advertising[18] rather than Adobe Flash, and it’s highly possible that WebGL will be added to a current mobile advertising platform such as Apple’s iAd.

Silverlight5

Silverlight is becoming popular in the RIA (Rich Internet Application) platform and WMV streaming container. Silverlight’s new 3D feature will extend the UX (User Experience) and interactivity of advertising. However, Silverlight doesn’t have many benefits compared to the Web Standard WebGL and Flash which is everywhere. Silverlight is a poorer choice than Flash in mobile devices since Silverlight only works on WP7 (Windows Phone 7) devices.

Silverlight is useful though for creating an advertising campaign around an RIA app that requires heavy UX and high performance such as face detection or augmented reality.

Molehill from Adobe Flash

Needless to say, Flash is still the number one solution for rich media advertising. Once Adobe expands 3D capabilities to Flash, a creation pipeline could be smoothly transitioned to handle 3D assets and animations.

Backup plan for unsupported systems

Although recent systems can handle cool technologies like Web 3D, there are still many computers that only run IE6. In most cases, a page can detect whether a browser supports Web 3D using JavaScript, and switch content to a compatible substitution. WebGL context could be switched to 2D context, which will handle 2D graphics within the same <canvas> container. 2D context profile is supported by most recent browsers including Android and iOS devices. Silverlight is a plug-in, so you can put backup content in <embed> and <object> tags. In Flash, you can run a 3D API check ActionScript, which detects if the current version of Flash supports 3D API.

The Future of 3D Advertising

If you are still unsure about the future of 3D advertising, here is a summary of why 3D matters.

3D is more interactive than 2D, especially rendered video reel. Characters and objects are dynamic and react based on your action.

3D leads new interaction. Smartphones have new sensors that detect motion, rotation, and your face, and 3D advertising is ready to react.

3D content could work with 3D TVs – a fast growing segment that will probably become mainstream.[19]

Importantly, advertisers can easily repurpose 3D TV content for Web 3D – since the content is already made 3D for television little additional work would be needed to use the same content on the web

One Source Multi-use – Disney could repurpose their 3D character assets for 3D advertising; Hyundai could repurpose the 3D models of their cars so users could explore their vehicles in a 3D environment

Augmented Reality (AR) requires 3D. AR is a fast growing advertising platform.[20]

It’s springtime in Philly and the streets seem to get more crowded each day with the fair-weather exercisers. With longer days and warmer temps upon us, it’s the time when many individuals’ thoughts turn to getting in shape. This is a great time to make the commitment since the weather is nice and it’s mentally easier to becoming active and adhere to a program. Starting an easy, inexpensive exercise program is an excellent way to combat the generally unhealthy lifestyle that Americans have become notorious for.

In America today a majority of the workforce lives a sedentary lifestyle. We sleep in comfy beds, wake up to sit on a sofa while watching our favorite morning show, ride in a car or on a train to the office, sit in front of a computer, then travel back to our homes where we sit and watch TV until it’s time to get back in our comfy beds. This routine is truly killing us.

Sitting or remaining inactive for most of the day with little or no exercise characterizes our sedentary lifestyle. This lack of exercise can cause shrinking and weakening of the muscles and increases our likelihood of injury. The accompanying reduction in physical fitness is generally associated with a weakening of the immune system. Yet, despite the many known benefits of exercise, most adults continue to lead a relatively sedentary lifestyle and therefore never achieve the health benefits of exercise.

According to various surveys and studies, 60-70% of the U.S. adult population is overweight, obese, or extremely obese. A lack of physical activity is one of the leading causes of preventable death worldwide and is a factor in many physical and mental ailments.

A sedentary lifestyle coupled with decreased metabolic rate factors heavily into the root of our unhealthy culture and contributes to or is a risk factor for:

Anxiety

Depression

Bad attitude (Considered a real problem at many workplaces)

Temperament

Cardiovascular disease

Increased mortality

Diabetes

Colon cancer

High blood pressure/Hypertension

Obesity

Osteoarthritis

Osteoporosis

Lipid disorders

Kidney Stones

Liver disease

Stroke

Sleep apnea

Gallbladder disease

Most of us have sedentary jobs. Work takes up a significant part of the day. What can we do to increase physical activity during the workday? It doesn’t require a large commitment to get started. What’s important is that you make a commitment to improve your life. Start small and gradually increase your periods of exercise. Make it a habit, part of your daily routine. Plan and follow a schedule – exercise, meals, sleep.

A recent New York Times article stated, “… a sedentary person’s risk of dying prematurely from any cause plummeted by nearly 20 percent if he or she began brisk walking (or the equivalent) for 30 minutes five times a week.” Do you need a better reason to begin an exercise regimen?

According to the Mayo Clinic, below are seven specific ways exercise can improve your life:

Exercise improves your mood.

Exercise combats chronic diseases.

Exercise helps you manage your weight.

Exercise boosts your energy level.

Exercise promotes better sleep.

Exercise can put the spark back into your sex life.

Exercise can simply be fun.

In addition to these I would like add the following benefits that companies can expect from healthier employees:

Reduced medical expenses

Less missed time due to illness

More productivity from a more alert and happier workforce

Better ideas and increased employee input

Better employee retention by companies that encourage healthy lifestyles

Improved company reputation

Increased employee interaction and synergy

We know the dangers of living a sedentary lifestyle. We know the advantages of regular exercise. How can we work exercise into our already hectic lives? It starts with making exercise a priority. Treat excercise like a job. Put it on the calendar. Schedule physical activity as you would any other appointment during the day. Don’t change your exercise plans for every interruption that comes along. Plan, schedule, adhere. Treat it as something that simply MUST. GET. DONE.

Be creative in how you incorporate exercise into you daily life. Find the things that work for you and make them habit. Habit and routine will ease your transition from a sedentary desk jockey to an active office jock.

Ways to increase activity and introduce exercise:

Stand while talking on the telephone

Stand up often to do any routine task

Make the switch to a standing desk

Take any opportunity to walk to your coworker rather than call or email

Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Or get off a few floors early and take the stairs the rest of the way

Take it on the road. If you travel for work, plan ahead. Bring your jump-rope or choose a hotel that has fitness facilities. Learn calisthenics and do them in your hotel room. If you’re stuck in an airport waiting for a plane, grab your bags and take a walk.

Participate in or start a recreation league at your company (softball, bowling, ski club)

Form a sports team to raise money for charity events

Start a lunchtime walking group. The regular routine and the support of your co-workers may help you stick with the program.

Join a fitness center near your job. Work out before or after work to avoid rush-hour traffic, or drop by for a noon workout

Join a fitness class – Yoga is an excellent choice for any fitness level

Hire a personal trainer – the investment will promote adherance

Walk around your building, business park, or city for a break during the workday or during lunch

Take fitness breaks. Rather than hanging out having coffee or a snack, take a short walk

If you’re scheduling a meeting with another coworker, take it on the road and hold the meeting while you walk

Active travel – choose a mode of transportation that is human powered. Buy a bike and ride to work. Buy some walking shoes and walk to work.

Park far away from work and walk

Get off the train earlier and walk farther

Brainstorm project ideas with a co-worker while taking a walk

Get off the bus a few blocks early and walk the rest of the way to work or home

Walk to a location far away to get your lunch

Start and end your day by taking your dog for a long walk or put the kid in a stroller and take a long stroll

In the end it’s all about being more active. So get moving! Life has changed over the years in America. Gone are the days of hunters and gatherers, gone are the days of working in the fields. We now make a living while doing very little physical activity. While the physicality of life has changed, it’s our health that suffers. By making a serious effort and some sensible adjustments to our lives we can create a more active lifestyle for ourselves and our coworkers. In doing so we can elevate our health and extend our lives.

Mobile phones are the fastest growing segment of the online market. Half a billion people accessed the mobile internet worldwide in 20091. Usage is expected to double in the next five years as mobile takes over the PC as the most popular way to get on the web1. Many mobile web users are “mobile-only,” i.e. they do not use a computer to access the web – ever. In countries like Egypt and India, those numbers are as high as 70% and 59%, respectively. Even in the U.S. 25% of people access the internet solely on their cellphones. Almost one in five global mobile subscribers has access to fast mobile Internet (3G or better) services and according to emarketer.com, U.S. mobile ad revenues are expected to hit $1 billion in 2011, which is a 35% annual growth – that’s quite a number when compared to the expected 10% growth in the traditional online advertising market*. Now for the hundredth time we’ve asked this question on Domus Dish – ARE YOU READY TO MAKE YOUR WEBSITE MOBILE-FRIENDLY YET?

Sheesh. If you were unaware, (although if you’re on the DD blog I don’t know how you could be) I’m sure these stats must have raised an eyebrow. And I’m also sure you must be thinking of going mobile. Now that you’re (FINALLY) ready to take the plunge, here are some Do’s and Dont’s to keep in mind:

KISS (Keep it simple, Stupid!)

Sorry, that was harsh. We aren’t calling you stupid. Not yet, at least. All we’re saying that in terms of mobile website design less is more. Remember – your visitors aren’t looking at your site on a computer screen – they’re looking at it on a small cellphone screen. Keep it simple.

The KISS design principle is very important to the design of an ideal mobile website. A mobile website should focus on great usability, rather than looking pretty and being full of extras. For example, make sure your navigation bar is as short as it can be, do not have excessive hyper-links within one page, and varying fonts should be avoided. A typical one-column layout is very popular for mobile websites, which makes them more usable and readable for mobile users. A simple mobile website will most likely be more effective than one that feels bloated, as most users would prefer a less cluttered, easy to navigate design.

Automatically detect mobile devices

Typing is a pain on even the best mobile devices, and many users prefer to avoid it when browsing. And telling your users that you have a mobile website, and making them type out the URL of the mobile version of your website (like m.acme.com or acme.com/mobile or acme.mobile) is difficult. And annoying. A user would prefer to type in acme.com on his mobile browser and would expect to have acme.com/mobile load automatically for him.

Mobile websites are not mind readers. Luckily, however, a variety of methods for automatic mobile device detection are available. The most reliable approach, in our experience, is User Agent detection, where a server makes a decision on what to serve based on how an incoming browser describes its capabilities. Other implementations feature real-time JavaScript requests to databases like DeviceAtlas or WURFL that also supply information on what a device can do. In addition, Google bot detects if a site has a mobile version of a website. Google Webmaster Tool has a feature to simulate mobile bot crawling. Putting this in place is great, but a mobile version is not complete until it’s automatically triggered for every mobile user so using these methods on your site is key.

Provide a clear path to the Regular Site

Depending on what kind of device your visitors are using, they may want to just use your standard website. This is particularly true with a lot of the better smartphones and the iPhone, which render standard websites really well. Occasionally, a piece of information that a user is looking for is not included in the mobile version. Give your mobile visitors the option of visiting the standard site. One very easy solution is to put a footer (where most of us are already predisposed to looking) link to your “Full Site” on every page. You could also give them the option to come back to the mobile site without having to use their back button. It’s considered good practice to disable mobile redirection for a user that completes transition to a full site. Some sites do this permanently (e.g. Digg Mobile) while others (CNN) set a timeout period of 1-2 hours with a special cookie. Your call!

Scrolling should be one-directional

It’s annoying to scroll in multiple directions when you’re visiting a website on your computer’s browser. It’s even worse to have to do it on your mobile device’s browser. As if that weren’t annoying enough, when using touchscreen devices, it’s very easy to accidentally scroll horizontally instead of vertically or vice versa. Grr. If your mobile website only scrolls one way, you eliminate the potential for such a hassle.

The viewport settings can be used for this purpose for pages specifically designed for the iOS (iPhone Operating System). Also, if you’ve specified viewport settings for the iPhone, it should be verified that these same settings are suitable for Safari on iPad. Specifically, if the width of the viewport has to match the width of the device, the device-width constant should be used instead of a hard-coded pixel value. This can be done by adding the following line of code:

<meta name=”viewport” content=”width=device-width” />

Create Mobile Stylesheets

While optimizing your main site for mobile use sometimes makes sense, it’s often easier to use a separate mobile theme, which can be done on most CMSs (Content Management Systems) by changing the CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) for mobile devices. This can be a much smaller task than you might imagine if you’re looking to keep the overall look and feel of the site. A mobile CSS can be used to load only on mobile devices. This can be done by the use of Media Types. Using different media type declarations allows you to assign different stylesheets for certain uses. Most desktop browsers recognize “screen” while many mobile devices use the “handheld” command. Check out the following example:

<link rel=”stylesheet” href=”mobile-style.css” type=”text/css” media=”handheld” />

Using this simple declaration, you can create a mobile-style.css file that will only be activated on handheld devices (at least those that allow styling). This, of course, won’t work on every device, but it will hit a decent amount.

Say NO to Pop-Ups

Not only are pop-up advertisements annoying, but depending on the particular mobile platform, popups and new windows can interfere with the browsing experience, so it’s a good idea not to use them. If you absolutely need something to open in a new window, make sure you alert your mobile visitors that it will do so.

Lesser emphasis and importance on JavaScript and Flash

JavaScript works on a lot of phones but it’s really bothersome. Android and iPhone devices are pushing JavaScript rapidly, but it’s advisable to avoid using JavaScript since some mobile devices still do not support them. Hover and other pretty stuff is also not supported by a lot of mobile devices. This all goes back to the KISS design theme in our first lesson. And forget about Flash completely if your visitors are using an iPhone – it will never work. Make sure all the important information and functionality on your mobile site is in plain (X)HTML/CSS. Otherwise, you risk a large portion of your visitors being unable to access important content. Moving forward, HTML5 features like Video, Websockets etc. would prove to be useful on mobile web as HTML5 gains support and popularity. It’s a good idea to have a plan for incorporating the same on your mobile websites.

Minimal use of images and resizing

Use only the images you need to get your message across. A few icons and your logo are fine. Images that are integral to the content on your site are also fine. But eliminate images that serve no purpose other than to look pretty. They generally won’t look pretty on a mobile device and take a lot of time to load, so why bother? The images that you end up using should be optimized for size for faster loading. If you use .PNG graphics WITHOUT transparency, convert them to JPGs with smaller quality.

Keeping these simple things in mind while making your website mobile-ready will ensure maximum compatibility of mobile devices and keep mobile users happy. And a happy user is a frequent user, which ensures the success of your mobile website.

Considering the rate of growth of the mobile web industry, transitioning to the mobile web is in a way – inevitable. The faster you are a part of the mobile web, the better it will be for your business.

Learn the URL schemes of iPhone App, how it works, types of schemes, how to utilize them.

Do you know how to create a mobile website? Or more importantly, do you know what a mobile website is? Domus Dish has covered this topic quite a bit, but in case you’ve missed it, a mobile website is what smart phone users see when looking at your webpage from their phones. There are many differences between mobile and traditional websites, which is why your website may not work for many smart phone users. For one Apple doesn’t support Flash (perhaps because Steve Jobs hates Adobe, but we’ll save that for another time), so we need to focus on HTML5, which is the next major revision of the HTML standard and is still in development. It can be frustrating that there’s such a disconnect, but learn it and move on – you don’t want to miss out on the mobile website movement.

I encourage you to look on the bright side – once you have mobile web mastered you’re opening your business to millions – some analysts even say BILLIONS – of mobile web users. Mobile websites are a new way of digital marketing, and a completely different approach compared to the development of traditional websites. Therefore, you can’t just treat it like a regular website with a smaller layout – there are distinct differences in the website’s development that will drastically affect the final result if they’re ignored. Read on as I list the top ways of making your website mobile friendly.

URL schemes for mobile

Although we can argue the various differences between regular HTML and HTML5, they don’t mean anything in terms of marketing efficiency. Most of the uniqueness comes from different functionalities of the hardware; 3G, WIFI, GPS, and more from the Operating System (OS) or software, such as app connectivity. App connectivity is when a smart phone runs another application when you click on a link on a mobile web browser – it’s what makes mobile web so convenient. To integrate new functions, we use a custom URL, scheme whose format looks like the following:

custom://function/pathorid

Mobile sites can make calls

One of the most important URL schemes to learn is how to set up your site to make a phone call. Ex:

<a href="”tel:+1">Call me</a>

You need to put the full phone number including the country code with plus(+) symbol (see above). Once a visitor clicks a “Call me” link, the user’s phone will automatically call the number that you input.

Mobile sites can send text messages

In a similar way, you can also create a link to let users text your number.

<a href="”sms:+">Text me</a>

How about “FaceTime” me?

If you’re intent on contacting your customers even more intimately, you can include an innovative FaceTime link, demonstrated below:

<a href="”facetime:+">Facetime me</a>

If you are using a Mac or iPod touch 4th generation, input your Apple ID instead of your phone number. Ex:

<a href="”facetime:betty@domusinc.com”">Facetime me</a>

App connectivity

Some cell phones’ mobile functions are developed to operate in other applications such as Google Maps, YouTube, iTunes, the iPhone’s App Store, iBooks Store, and third-party social applications, such as Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, etc. For example, many websites will direct users to Google Maps when they search for a business’s location. Very helpful, but once users click on these links, they will be directed away from your website. With this in mind, you might consider a different approach to track the outbound traffic[1].

Google Maps

If you want to show a map and pinpoint a certain place, you can include a Google Maps link, demonstrated below:

<a href="”http://maps.google.com/maps?q={Latitude},{Longitude}&amp;z={Zoom}”">Place me</a>

{ } values need to be replaced with numbers that indicate the selected location. It’s still a HTTP URL scheme, but Apple devices recognize it and automatically switch to a map application on the iPhone, not the actual Google Maps website.

YouTube

Like Google Maps, regular YouTube links will link to a YouTube application. See below:

<a href="”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHxe8B3OUDc”">Youtube Video</a>

Facebook

Facebook has its own URL scheme, which could link to a user’s newsfeed, friends, etc. However, at the moment linking to a certain fan page[2] has been blocked in the most recent version of the Facebook application. We’re continuing to investigate if there is a way around this. Stay tuned.

Twitter

Twitter also has its own URL scheme as follows[3]:

<a href="”twitter://user?screen_name=domusinc”">Follow me</a>

Foursquare

Foursquare is location-based service where users can check-in when they arrive at a store, restaurant or other business. Businesses can include a link to their user profile or venue page.

To link to a user profile:

<a href="”foursquare://user/krisszupa”">Foursquare add me</a>

To link to a venue:

<a href="”foursquare://venue/4ab7e57cf964a5205f7b20e3″">Foursquare check-in me</a>

Notice that the venue ID should be 24 bytes, or letters/numbers, long which is used in Foursquare API v2.

iTunes

If you have an album or podcast in the iTunes Store, you can create a link for that on your website. Ex:

<a href="”http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?i={id1}&amp;id={id2}&amp;s={id3}”">Check out in iTunes</a>

App Store

Similar to the URL for the iTunes Store, you can create a link to the iPhone App Store. Ex:

<a href="”">Check out in App Store</a>

iBooks Store

Some sources say that we can link using the “itms-books:” URL scheme[4], but what I figured out is that “http://itunes.apple.com/{Country Code}/book/{ISBN}”[5] will also work. Ex:

<a href="”http://itunes.apple.com/us/book/isbn9781906615048″">Buy it in iBooks Store</a>

Other tricks

This looks like a tricky one, but with a little guidance it’s not too difficult. Including mobile Safari running in iOS has unique protocol named “data:” which can link to an offline page whose source is located in the link itself[6]. Ex:

<a href="”data:text/html;charset=utf-8;base64,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&lt;br"></a> CkgLyBydG90YWxfZmFjdG9yICsgMC4yNSkgKiBydG90YWxfZmFjdG9yOwogICAgd3JpdGVPdXQoJyQnICsgYW1vdW50LnRvRml4ZWQoMikgKyAnICsgJCcgKyAocnRvdGFsLWFtb3VudCkudG9GaXhlZCgyKSArICcgPSAkJyArIHJ0b3RhbC50b0ZpeGVkKDIpKTsKICAgIAp9CgpmdW5jdGlvbiB6YXAoZmllbGQpIHsKICAgIGlmICghIGZpZWxkLnphcHBlZCApIHsKICAgICAgICBmaWVsZC56YXBwZWQgPSB0cnVlOwogICAgICAgIGZpZWxkLnZhbHVlICA9ICIiOwogICAgfQp9Cgo8L3NjcmlwdD4KCjwvaGVhZD4KPGJvZHk+Cgo8aDE+VGlwIENhbGN1bGF0b3I

Summing Up the Elements

No matter what features you choose to include in your mobile website, you still need to check the site’s compatibility for each device. For example, a link to Twitter will not work on smart phones that are not an iOS device or on phones that do not have a Twitter application already installed. As you get your site mobile ready, it’s helpful to engage an expert in the beginning stages.

Facing a new reality

In the past 2 years, the percentage of consumers who are using smartphones to access the web has skyrocketed to more than 49 million1. A recent study by Morgan Stanley predicted that by 2015 there will be more mobile web users than there are desktop users2.

As the mobile audience continues to grow, our mobile devices continue to shrink in size and increase in functionality. They’ve gone from oversized “Crackberries” we used for constantly checking email to organic extensions of our hands and minds that nearly do everything for us. Need to pay a bill, make a dinner reservation, turn off your house lights, video chat with a customer service representative or kill zombies? There’s an App for that.

These increasing mobile web users want access to immediate, valuable information. Whether they’re commuting to work, in a meeting or waiting on dinner, their time is valuable and they expect to find the information they want and need instantaneously. As mobile platforms are rapidly becoming the dominant web venue, your business needs to compete effectively in this 24/7 marketplace and you can’t afford to be “out of pocket” when a transaction is on the line. You need to think, listen and act like a mobile user.

Here’s the good news

Although your existing website can be searched and viewed via mobile devices/smartphones (e.g., iPhone, iPad or Android), it doesn’t mean it’s mobile-ready. However, converting and optimizing your site for smartphones is probably faster, easier and less expensive than you expect. Here are a few things to consider when approaching a mobile-ready website design:

Develop a strategy. Approach it the same way you do your current website, with your customers’ user-experience and objectives in mind.

Analyze your existing website, identify existing high-value content in short, digestible chunks to fulfill end user needs.

Think about usability and how you will organize it. Keep it simple, easy to read and navigate, and above all, design it to fit mobile devices/smart phone specifications.

Identify and evaluate the need for bells and whistles beyond news and copy text: video, graphics, form fields, instant calling, SMS message sending, etc.

Determine how you will deploy your mobile site. It may be better to use a separate domain to display the site such as “m.” or “/mobile” instead of an adaptation of your current website domain.

Test your designs on various mobile platforms to ensure site optimization and expandability.

Execute an effective SEO strategy ensuring your mobile website appears in a search on any mobile device/smartphone or search engine.

Leave it to the professionals.

Have a web designer or interactive agency handle this project. Depending on the level of customization required, it’s not a difficult undertaking, and the rewards are potentially great. At Domus, our staff of enterprise-level designers and developers can convert an existing web site simply and easily, or we can customize a dynamic and effective selling environment to work on every major browser and handheld device. Our advanced knowledge of online and mobile communications will give you a significant competitive edge in exchanging information between consumers and your brand as well as identifying and reaching new mobile prospects.

Making your website mobile-compatible is just the beginning. With more than twenty years’ experience in the marketing and communications sector, we will assure that your marketing strategy is sound and your message has been crafted to deliver optimal content and drive sales.

How important is your website? In today’s marketplace it’s everything. Your website is your number one means of providing your brand, consistency, and message to potential customers. We live in an Internet world, if your website isn’t first rate it will be detrimental to your business. Is it time for your website to have a makeover? More importantly, is it time for your website to start delivering the ROI that your products or services demand?

Businesses know they can’t ignore the Internet as a channel for reaching consumers, but a new study released by Pew sheds light on the value of Internet marketing strategies to potential sales. Pew’s Online Product Research report reveals that more than half of Americans research products and services online prior to making purchases. The report also found that the commercial use of the Internet by American adults has grown since the mid-2000s, with 58% of Americans now reporting that they perform online research concerning the products and services that they are considering purchasing compared to 49% in 2004.

Focus on three aspects when conducting an audit of your website: technical integrity, communication clarity and search engine utility.

Technical Integrity

The monitoring and maintenance of your website by a qualified team, with extensive experience is how Domus Digital can insure the continued technical integrity of your most valuable sales tool.

Through our knowledge of how technical integrity impacts the quality of websites, the affordability of making changes, and the ultimate goal of customer satisfaction we can assist clients with website makeovers that will ultimately lead to increased ROI.

Technical integrity is an assurance that we can provide as a result of the mature process we use in all of our website makeovers. With our process we can accurately predict technical performance, find and correct issues early, provide timely access and updates to information, give clients accurate cost modeling, and quantify and analyze performance.

The combined result of our technical integrity process is quality, affordability and customer satisfaction.

Communication Clarity

There are few things more frustrating than landing on a website that is confusing in its form and function and few things will cause consumers to go to the competition’s sites faster. Today, when people have less time to spare, succinct and clear communication is very crucial. Communication is the act of conveying information – its sole purpose is to convey the right thought and avoid miscommunication and to convey the right thought, there must be clarity. Clarity is of prime importance throughout the communication cycle for effective transfer of information. The goal is effective communication. This means no misconceptions, misrepresentations or misunderstandings.

Clients often have complex messages for consumers but this does not mean the message cannot be presented in a clear and effective manner. Through a website makeover Domus Digital will focus your message or messages to achieve your goals. Often organizations will attempt to accomplish too much through their website without evaluating how this will effect the user experience. By creating a website that has clear communication within a focused delivery model our makeover will improve the user experience of your website.

Search Engine Utility

Utility is the quality of being of practical use. This is important because in order to benefit from a website makeover the website must be found easily by consumers. Of utmost importance when making a website over is SEO and SEM. Domus Digital has been providing these services for our clients for many years. In doing so we ensure that a search for services or products results in consumers being presented with our client’s sites at or near the top of the results. Without SEO and SEM a beautiful and functional site will be lacking in traffic to achieve improved ROI. We will not let that happen, we provide the search engine utility required to move you to the top of search results.

Don’t let your most valuable avenue of promotion become lost in the multitude of competitor’s websites. There has never been a more important time to update your website. Consumers place a high value on the information they find on the Internet and your website must be able to perform to consumers’ expectations or you will lose sales.

Domus Digital will conduct a thorough audit of your existing website, identify the problems and opportunities your company has and provide you with a clear plan for a website makeover that will improve your site’s performance along the three most important axes: technical integrity, communication clarity and search engine utility.

The obsession with social media is obvious, especially Facebook, so it’s no surprise that the movie “Social Network” ranked #1 in box office. According to Mark Zuckerberg, there will be over 1 billion “likes” across the web in the just first 24 hours of the “Like” button – which launched April 21st. OK, pick up your jaw and continue reading.

The “Like” button is now the alpha and omega of media conversions, leading to the fact that most traffic has been driven from the “Like” button, and it’s good enough to be considered a final goal in social media engagement. Quick question for you: Do you track “Likes” and calculate how much money you spend per one “Like” or how much value one “Like” generates? If your answer is no, go to the movie theater and watch the Social Network and see what 500M friends means.

Embedding the “Like” button on your website as most of you probably have gives you the most basic connectivity with Facebook; however, if you don’t set up toolbox to track the “Likes” then you’re cheating yourself. Facebook has announced their simple analytic tool, “Insights,” which allows you to count “Likes” in addition to the click rates of your fan page, applications, and your website outside Facebook.

As far as tracking your Facebook fan page goes, it’s already set up for you. You can use the “Insights” menu on the left side of the fan page, but you also need to put Facebook meta tags on your web pages as well. In order to obtain the meta tag, go to http://www.facebook.com/insights and press “Insights for your domain.” Then you can bind your domain with Insights and get a meta tag such as <meta property=”fb:admins” content=”xxxx” />. Put this meta tag on your web pages’ headers, then Facebook will count “Likes” from your website. Easier than you thought!

Although Facebook “Insights” gives your website useful statistics of social activities, it can’t be combined with your media conversions through campaign, landing page, website, email blasts, direct mail, mobile page, or mobile app by itself.

Additionally, there are two tricks to combine “Like” activities into existing analytics solutions, such as Google Analytics. The first trick is to create a script to monitor “Like” clicks. Facebook provides a javascript SDK with an event handler object named “FB.Event.” With “FB.Event” you can trigger every “Like” click by putting “FB.Event” subscribe(‘edge.create’, function(response) { … }); on your page. Track away!

Another trick is to integrate Facebook Insights with Google Analytics using Facebook’s Graph API. Utilizing this solution, you can pull analytic data from Facebook Insights by time range using Graph API, and cross-reference it with Google Analytics using the Google Analytics API. Then, you can finally merge all data into one unified report. This solution can give you significant views of which users clicked “Like” grouped by campaign, age, sex, location and etc. The only drawback to this solution is that it requires several programming techniques including Web Service, FBML, Facebook Graph API, the Google Analytics API, oAuth, and etc. But in the end, all the sweat and tears are worth it.

According to Morgan Stanley, mobile internet grows faster than any other platforms including Netscape, and AOL in history. Customers, and more importantly, NEW customers, are on their mobile phones.

Last year 56.9 million people accessed the web from their cell phones. These people aren’t just surfing the web. They’re looking for a product or a service or a company, in their area, and they wanted it five minutes ago. That’s an audience full of movers, shakers and buyers. And one you can’t afford to miss out on. $1.6 billion worth of purchases were made on mobile devices last year. That’s A LOT of spending.

If we’ve learned anything from social media, it’s that we need to be where our customers are. According to Morgan Stanley, mobile internet grows faster than any other platforms including Netscape, and AOL in history. Customers, and more importantly, NEW customers, are on their mobile phones.

It’s clearer than ever – mobile marketing is something you simply can’t miss. So what do phone users see when they go to your website? There is a fundamental design difference between a regular website and a mobile website. It’s worth grabbing your phone and taking a look. We’ll wait.

A mobile site needs to have a different content structure for viewing in palm sized screens. It can’t have too much information in one screen. Customers can zoom in on your microscopic content, but who wants to do that?

Mobile searchers are on a mission. They want an address or phone number, a menu, movie times, store hours, or a quick drink not only by searching keywords, but also by geography. And they want it NOW. A mobile site should be set up to serve up every types of information.

Mobile social media is also pumping up traffic to your mobile web. I’m sure you’re not surprised to learn that Facebook has surpassed Google to become the top source for web traffic, but you should take note that the Facebook application for smartphones is ranked #1 in popularity across most smartphone platforms. Once users “like” your page’s content or products, it needs to be displayed correctly in both desktop and mobile forms.

It’s just a simple way to make your site instantly more accessible to a mobile user.

First, revisit the existing website, evaluate what’s currently there, and more importantly, what you want to see there. Then you can begin to plan your mobile content and information architecture.

Next, consider new user experience (UX), such as multi-touch and gesture zooming in/out or selection options, which are popular in mobile UX. Inconsistency between touch and mouse interface can block some functions of your website. For example, a rollover menu or image will not work on mobile device at all. Keep these portions of your website in mind when evaluating your site. User interaction should be re-considered and re-created in all applicable areas of your website.

Also, please be aware of Flash and its drawbacks for mobile web. Cell phones and smart phones are not compatible with Flash. Period. If your website uses Flash mobile users are seeing a whole lot of nothing. (Technically, Android devices do currently support Flash but practically performance is very bad).

Lastly, re-implement new analytics that can track mobile activities. Keep in mind that you need to track not only web traffic sources, but also “app traffic sources,” which can be more tricky. Location-based query and phone-query should be considered and counted as well.

In the March 2010 issue of Fast Company Magazine, it was noted that US Cell phone penetration was at 34% in 2000 and increased to 89% in 2010. While those figures are impressive, they don’t point out a very critical detail of today’s cell phone: it’s not a cell phone at all, it’s a smart phone. Phones today are used for so much more than talking and texting – they’re handheld computers and with the right features they can connect to the internet, engage in social media, upload videos, and if your business has a functional mobile site, lead customers directly to you. If your site is not smart phone compatible, then throw in the towel, because more than half of cell phone internet users go online daily through their mobile device and its rate is increasing. But if you can sustain business by losing half your customers – then please, let us know how.

Domus is an interactive agency with the ability to help you transform your business into a mobile machine with 24/7 access through smart phone technology. Let us help you.CodeProject

In an environment where traditional marketing is overshadowed by technological methods, equipping yourself with the newest and greatest digital capabilities is essential for any business to thrive.

Domus has upped the ante with the launch of Domus Digital, its leading edge digital marketing unit. In addition to common digital capabilities, the agency can now harness scalable enterprise technologies such as cloud computing, as well as leading-edge technologies like augmented reality, computer vision and face recognition. We’re talking the latest and greatest in digital technology.

Apple has officially announced their iAd development kit, “iAd JS”, which enables agencies to develop interactive ads for their clients. As explained in Apple’s technical documentation, it gives more interactive capabilities than any other existing interactive media, including Adobe Flash.

First, it can accept a user’s gestures, not only on the touch screen but also by motion. For example, you can create a banner ad showing a soda bottle, allowing users to shake it until it explodes. Using the kit, you can also develop ads that detect orientation.

Next, the iAd JS provides for integration with social media. When iAd is activated, the user is online; therefore, it can connect to a social network and download dynamic content to the banner. It’s also possible to update real-time status of an advertising campaign, such as competitive or ranking information.

Based on user interaction, it can also store an image generated by the banner to the iPhone’s photo gallery, so users can see ad images on their albums. For example, by utilizing social media integration, an iAd banner can create and save a user’s future baby photo with campaign copy based on a photo identified by Facebook ID.

Domus has full iAd creation capabilities and is actively involved in development projects for our clients. For more information, please visit us at http://www.domusinc.com.

On April 30th, Apple released their first draft of the iAd framework reference document. Although this document is written for developers and not advertisers, it gave some insight into how advertisers will be able to use the iAd program.

Below are some key points -

Developers will be able to embed ads in their apps using the AdBannerView object. After developers embed ads in their apps, they will start earning revenue.

iAd will use an ad network. When adding iAd to an app, developers will choose to display their apps among different segments available in the ad network.

iAd includes standard ad sizes including 320×50 for portrait banner ads and 480×32 for landscape banner ads. The ads are shown in the background of an app.

The iAd program can be enabled and disabled. App developers can recognize if iAd is loaded by bannerLoaded property while cancelBannerViewAction allows applications to cancel displaying iAd.

Because developers can shutdown iAd at any time, revenue wouldn’t be calculated by PPC or PPV but instead a new way that is to be determined by Apple. Apple mentions that revenue can be lower if developers let apps close iAd frequently.

Lastly, this technical document only covers the iPhone and iPod touch but not yet the iPad.

We are eagerly awaiting more details on iAd as they become available.

Microsoft may well have hit a home run with its new Windows Mobile 7 phones, especially with its follow-up announcement probably coming next month at MIX10.

Microsoft might well have hit a home run with its Windows Mobile 7 announcement this past week at Windows Mobile Conference, and well into the 9th inning at that.(Nice baseball references with Spring Training just a couple of weeks away…) Although the first phones based on the platform won’t be out until the fourth quarter, they seem worth waiting for. The user interface looks sleek and fluid, similar to the Zune’s. Strong support for social media, photos, music, and videos is built in. Even some XBox Live integration is included. And for business users, the phones will support mobile versions of Office, including OneNote and SharePoint.

Moreover, Microsoft has not yet announced everything. At next month’s MIX10 event in Las Vegas, they will probably announce Silverlight 4 support for Windows Mobile 7. More specifically, they’ll probably announce that Silverlight will be the native platform for Windows Mobile 7 application development. That unleashes a huge army of .NET Windows developers onto the market, and it also means that Windows Mobile 7 phones will have full rich media web capabilities.

Coming into 2010, it seemed like the Apple recently announced iPad was going to be the year’s technological game changer, but the real game changer might be Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 7 phones . It will be a long wait for the fourth quarter, but an interesting one.

Google just recently introduced their new Google Toolbar-based Sidewiki feature. This allows anyone with the Google Toolbar installed (which is a large percentage of internet users) to add his own side comments to ANY web site on the internet. And those comments are then visible to any other Sidewiki users who later visit that site.

Prior to Google Sidewiki, marketers at least had a little control over their own web site, even if they had effectively lost control over references to them on social networking sites, blogs, etc. Now, however, even your home page is an accessible target for web surfers, whether or not their comments are accurate or even relevant. And you have little or not control over what is written, other than adding your own comments to the mix.

Moreover, as of right now, those comments are not visible outside of Sidewiki – they don’t show up in any search engine searches – so unless you have Sidewiki yourself, you’ll never know what people are writing about you on your own web site. Therefore, like it or not, as of today, marketers should have at least one machine on which they have installed Sidewiki, and should regularly visit their own site to see if any side notes are added by others.

Microsoft’s Silverlight platform has been gaining ground as a rich internet platform. The installed base of Silverlight has been consistently growing, reaching over 30% of computers this summer. Moreover, Microsoft recently released version 3.0, which adds many new features for developers and media providers. For example, Silverlight 3 (and Microsoft’s Media Services 3.0) supports streaming video in high definition (1080p). And in 2010, Microsoft will enhance digital rights management (DRM) capabilities, making it easy for content providers to distribute their media digitally. Moreover, Microsoft is pushing Silverlight along many other fronts. It is now supported on the Xbox and on a number of Nokia phones. It will also be supported on all Windows 7.0 mobile phones (2010).

Silverlight is fast becoming a great cross-platform development platform. And Microsoft is making it easier for legions of individuals and small businesses to develop Silverlight applications by giving away development tools under its WebSpark program.

The next 18 months should prove very interesting in the number and type of applications being developed and delivered using Silverlight. The possibilities available to marketers should be just as interesting.

Domus, Inc. is a marketing communications company based in Philadelphia, with a development network that includes expertise in a number of areas, including Silverlight. Please visit our web site at http://www.domusinc.com.
